Horisis gave Imhotep one last forlorn look as the queen’s servant led her out of his house. They’d had no opportunity to speak of the previous night’s diversions, or at least they’d made no opportunity to do so. There was so much that each wanted to say to the other, but all they could do was try to remain impassive as they were parted forever.

“Imhotep?” prompted Queen Minititi, coaxing him from his thoughts.

“Yes, my Queen?” He preferred dealing with this third and youngest of Djoser’s wives. His king had wanted a wife of even temper, pleasant nature and quick wit, and Imhotep had found Minititi in a very short time. He knew that both the other queens liked this third wife, as did almost everyone who had dealings with her.

She brushed some invisible dust from her linen gown. “I am sorry to be forcing you two apart, but I had thought that you had already chosen a wife.” She watched the king’s vizier out of the corner of her eye.

Imhotep glanced at the servants standing silently by. Would his personal life be the subject of market gossip? “I did. Or I had. Menofret seemed so perfect. I still can find no fault in her, but Horisis also answers a need in me. I have, however, given my word to Menofret, and I shall follow through on that.”

“Even though Queen Hetephernebti has condemned the two that you do not choose? Surely this is a puzzle, Imhotep.” She stepped closer. “You are very good at solving puzzles,” she added, quietly enough that only he had heard.

“What do you mean, my Queen?”

Minititi turned away from him and then waved to one of her servants. The man left quickly and returned with the third woman, a dark-skinned Nubian who kept her chin held high. Her clothes appeared exotic to Imhotep, consisting of two pieces of colourful fabric with one about her breasts and the other about her hips and waist. Her hair was very curly, but had an orderly about it that was pleasing to the eye. Even to an Egyptian.

“Imhotep, as decreed by Queen Hetephernebti,” Minititi announced loudly, “I bring you Bubahti, princess of one of the Nubian kingdoms. You both know of the queen’s commands. I leave you now to return in one month.”

“Thank you, Queen Minititi. I look forward to seeing you then.”

“Ha!” laughed the Nubian haughtily.

The queen and her servants departed, leaving Imhotep alone with his new guest aside from those of his own servants who waited patiently. He stared at her for a few seconds, wondering how he should speak to a princess such as she who was a prisoner in an enemy country.

“Princess Bubahti, welcome to my humble home. My servants will see to all of your needs...”

“Ha!” she exclaimed. “As if the words of a rutting Egyptian pig mean anything!” She pointed her finger at him. “You shall not ride me like you do your pale-skinned whores that...”

However, Imhotep had turned suddenly and simply walked out of the room.
